A work permit can be renewed only once, and the application must be filed before it expires. Filing late means starting again as a new application.
Conditions for renewal
- The work permit is still valid when you file.
- The employee continues with the same employer, in the same position and job title shown on the permit.
- The employer still needs a foreign employee in that position.
Validity and number of renewals
A work permit can be renewed once, for up to 2 years. When the renewal period ends, continuing to work requires a new work permit.
When to file
The application must be filed within the statutory window before expiry, usually the last 45 days. Start preparing two to three months ahead, because the health certificate and company documents take time.
Typical documents
- The employer's request for renewal.
- The current, valid work permit.
- A valid passport.
- A new health certificate.
- Portrait photos to specification.
- Proof of continued employment: labour contract or appointment decision.
After renewal
A work-based temporary residence card runs in line with the work permit, so the card needs renewing straight afterwards. Cards for an accompanying spouse and children must be renewed at the same time.
Notes
- Changing employer, position or job title is not a renewal. It needs a new or reissued permit.
- Renew a passport that is close to expiry before filing, because documents cannot run past the passport expiry date.
- Work permit rules were updated in 2025. Check the exact deadlines against the current regulations.
