Applying for the wrong type is a common reason applications have to be redone. How to tell the two apart and choose the one you need.
Certificate No. 1
Shows only convictions that have not been expunged. This is the type usually required for work permits, employment and most administrative procedures. Someone else can file it for you under authorisation.
Certificate No. 2
Shows all convictions, including expunged ones. This type is usually requested by foreign immigration authorities for residency applications. Filing through an authorised person is more restricted.
Which one to choose
- Ask the receiving authority which type they require, ideally in writing.
- For a work permit application in Vietnam, it is usually No. 1.
- For immigration to another country, check carefully, as many countries ask for No. 2.
A note on timing
A criminal record certificate is usually accepted only for a limited period after issue. Time your application so the certificate is still valid when you file your main application.
