Japanese citizens can enter Vietnam visa-free for 45 days. Long assignments, employment and accompanying family need the right visa and residence documents.
Japanese companies have been in Vietnam for decades, and many Japanese experts and managers are posted here every year. This is what Japanese citizens should know before they travel.
The 45-day exemption
Japanese citizens may stay for 45 days from the date of entry without a visa, whatever the passport type or purpose of entry. The current policy runs until 14 March 2028 and may be extended.
When you need a visa
- Staying more than 45 days: an e-visa, for up to 90 days.
- Posted by a parent company: a work permit or an exemption confirmation (intra-company transfer), a work visa, then a temporary residence card.
- Setting up a company or contributing capital: an investor visa.
- Accompanying family: a family visa and a family residence card.
Documents from Japan
A Japanese criminal record certificate is issued by the police, usually only on proof of who is asking for it, so apply early. Degrees and experience letters must be certified in Japan and legalised, unless exempt, then translated and certified in Vietnam.
Notes
- Visa-free entry does not allow you to work in Vietnam.
- An intra-company transferee still needs the exemption confirmation before starting work.
- Settle the visa type before you enter if you plan to apply for a temporary residence card.
