Receiving a salary, paying rent and using e-wallets all need a Vietnamese bank account. The main condition is a residence document with enough validity left.
Who can open one
Banks in Vietnam open payment accounts for foreigners who hold valid residence documents. In practice most banks ask for a temporary residence card or a visa with enough validity left, and rarely open accounts for someone on a tourist e-visa.
Documents usually requested
- A valid passport.
- A temporary residence card, or a long-term visa that is still valid.
- A labour contract or other proof of your purpose of stay, depending on the bank.
- A Vietnamese phone number registered in your name.
- A visit in person to check documents and record biometric data.
Things to know
- The validity of the account and card is usually tied to your residence document. When you renew your residence card, update the bank.
- Money paid into the account needs a clear source, such as salary under a labour contract.
- Transferring money abroad needs proof of lawful income and tax compliance.
- Each bank has its own requirements. Ask for the document list in advance.
Why a residence card helps
A temporary residence card is the long-term residence document most widely accepted by banks. With one, it is also easier to register a SIM in your name, set up an e-wallet and sign a lease.
