Both let a foreigner stay in Vietnam legally, but they differ in validity, number of entries and eligibility.
The main differences
- Validity: visas are usually short, while a temporary residence card can last several years depending on the category.
- Entries: visas come in single and multiple entry, while a card allows unlimited entries while valid.
- Eligibility: a card needs clear grounds such as a work permit, an investment certificate or a family relationship.
- Everyday use: a card is also used to open a bank account, rent a home or register a vehicle.
When a visa is enough
If you are in Vietnam for a short stay to travel, visit family or do business, a visa (including an e-visa) is quicker and simpler.
When to get a temporary residence card
If you work, invest or live with family in Vietnam for a long period, a card saves you from repeated visa extensions and makes daily life easier.
Things to remember
A card cannot outlast your passport or the document it is based on. If you change passport, employer or the grounds for the card, you need to go through the procedure again.
