Once you hold a work or investor residence card, your spouse and children can apply for family cards to live with you in Vietnam. Here are the conditions, the documents and the points to watch.
Who can get one
A TT temporary residence card is issued to the spouse and children under 18 of a foreigner who holds a work, investor or certain other residence cards. It is also issued to foreigners who are the parent, spouse or child of a Vietnamese citizen.
Validity
A TT card is valid for up to 3 years. For relatives of a foreigner, the card cannot run longer than the sponsor's own card, and never past the passport expiry date.
Proof of relationship
- A marriage certificate (for a spouse).
- A birth certificate (for a child).
- Documents issued abroad must be legalised, translated into Vietnamese and certified, unless exempt.
Who acts as sponsor
For the family of an employee or investor, the company sponsoring that person usually sponsors the relatives too. For the spouse of a Vietnamese citizen, the Vietnamese spouse is the sponsor.
Points to watch
- Relatives should enter on a family visa. Entering on another visa may mean the card cannot be applied for straight away.
- A family card does not allow you to work. Working requires a separate work permit.
- If the sponsor's card expires or is revoked, the relatives' cards are affected too.
- Have marriage and birth certificates legalised before you travel.
